Hey kids, let’s play basketball

The 6th Ülker Mini Basketball Festival, organized jointly by Ülker and the Turkish Basketball Federation, was held July 2 – 6 in Izmir. During the event, 68 basketball teams competed, 50 of which were boys’ teams and 18 of which were girls’ teams. Ülker invests millions of dollars every year to promote Turkish sports.

Young basketball players and their families from all corners of the country attended the mini basketball festival that was held over a 5 day period.  During the festival tournament there were no winners or losers, and each evening the children were treated to various activities and opportunities to socialize with each other. For the length of the festival, the little basketballers took advantage of many activities which included watching the film “Nim’s Island”, getting advice from famous basketballers and having fun at picnics. They toured the Maritime Museum and had a lesson in environmental awareness for the members of TEMA who gave a presentation about global warming.  All 1,000 of the attendees at the festival received a medal and a certificate of participation from the organizers.

Ülker Corporate Communications Director Zuhal Şeker, calling attention to Ülker’s projects that promote active participation, and contribute to the health and well-being of future generations, said, “Our cooperation with the  Turkish Basketball Federation to organize basketball festivals is one of those projects. This organization is not only meant to bring nearly a thousand children together to play sports each year;  Ülker also takes care to give them instruction on environmental awareness, take them to movies and organize other exciting events for them.  The kids that are given knowledge today will become the adults of tomorrow; in future they will be more sensitive individuals.   Of course the events also help kids from every corner of Turkey to develop friendships and learn to socialize with each other.”

Turkish Basketball Federation President Turgay Demirel commented, “The Ülker Mini Basketball festivals have become traditional.  The children who participate learn basketball’s finer points and how to compete in a sportsmanlike fashion. They learn the spirit of the sport and experience feelings of friendship, fellowship and brotherhood. ”
